Hello from the Activities Department,

Apple season has arrived! Throughout the month we will be doing several different activities that have to do with apples. We will be painting an apple tree using crumbled up newspaper and wine bottle corks, reminiscing about apple picking while enjoying some apple slices dipped in caramel, and taking a bus trip to an apple orchard. If you know of any good apple orchards I am open for suggestions.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month. Raising money and awareness for Alzheimer’s is something that is very important to me as I’m sure it is for many of you who have seen the disease first hand. To celebrate Grandparents Day, I would like to invite family members and friends of all ages to join us in making ribbons and bracelets that will be sold to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association. We will be making the ribbons and bracelets on Saturday, September 8 from 10:00-11:00 am. Cookies will be served for those who help! On this day I will also be talking pictures of residents and their families. These pictures will be put in a picture frame that residents will be decorating. The picture frame will read “happiness is being a grandparent.”  Wednesday, September 12 MNRC will be having a bake sale from 1:30-3:30 pm in the front entrance by the fireplace. All funds will go to the Alzheimer’s Association.  On Friday, September 28 staff and residents are asked to wear purple to show their support for the 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s. Join us in the fight against Alzheimer’s because memories matter!

Becky Voss, has been gracious enough to make more wreaths and table décor to sell at our home décor sale on Saturday, September 22 from 9:00-10:30 am. These items will be made for fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, sports, and kids. Proceeds from this sale with go towards new bingo cards!

Lastly, I would like to acknowledge and thank Laverne Digman for his time and dedication to MNRC. After 10+ years of coming in weekly to lead rosary Laverne has decided to retire. Staff and residents will miss seeing his smiling face and bright personality each Thursday! Don’t worry, rosary will still be held every Thursday at 10:00 am thanks to Janaan Kraus.
