Happy Family Fun Month!

I am looking forward to the month of August because of all the fun events we have planned. Residents are excited to go to our first Kernels Baseball Game on Monday, August 6th. Big thanks to Camp Courageous for allowing us to use their bus and trailer to do these fun bus trips. Like Leann mentioned, we will be celebrating Monticello Nursing & Rehab’s 50th Birthday on Sunday, August 12 from 2:00-4:30 pm. Residents, resident families, staff and community members are all invited to help us celebrate. It has become a tradition for us to have a Hawaiian party during the month of August. This year our Hawaiian party will be on Thursday, August 23rd at 2:15 pm. Chef Jason will be providing some delicious grilled kabobs along with a blue Hawaiian drink both alcoholic or non-alcoholic depending on your preference. Throughout the month we will be making different “Hawaiian” crafts like making shells into crabs and making a jelly fish using egg cartons.

During the month of August, we will also be celebrating National Watermelon Day, National Root Beer Float Day and World Honey Bee Day. For Watermelon Day I will be serving watermelon during one of our discussions as well as making a watermelon button craft. A favorite at the nursing home, root beer floats, will be served during our scheduled movie day. Lastly, we will celebrate world honey bee day with honey bee trivia/facts and making bee treat bags. During our bus trip in July we got to see honey bees making honey at the Indian Creek Nature Center. Donna, our activity assistant, also bought little samples of different kinds of honey for the residents to try while at the nature center. We tried everything from blueberry honey to root beer honey! This sparked a lot of interest in honey bees so it makes for a perfect month to learn more about the honey bee.

The activities program is looking for donations for prizes that will be used for bingo during our 50th Birthday Celebration. We would greatly appreciate any kind of donation that can be given away as a prize. Feel free to contact Heather or Leann at (319) 465-5415 for any questions concerning donations!
